There are 30 finalists, and the professional jury has already made its choices. The contest is part of a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  The stories are not cheerful &#8211; the first few I looked at included torture, rape, and child labor &#8211; maybe a good excuse to remind ourselves of everything we have to be thankful for this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Above, a photo from a story by Mario Magalhaes in Folha de S. Paulo on the slave-like conditions of sugar cane workers in Brazil. I&#8217;ll be at the awards ceremony on Saturday, looking forward to meeting the 30 finalists from around the world.
