{"id":78,"date":"2003-08-01T18:24:52","date_gmt":"2003-08-01T22:24:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/lydondev\/2003\/08\/01\/slugger-otoole-blogging-in-a-combat-"},"modified":"2012-05-04T00:06:24","modified_gmt":"2012-05-04T04:06:24","slug":"slugger-otoole-blogging-in-a-combat-zone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/lydondev\/2003\/08\/01\/slugger-otoole-blogging-in-a-combat-zone\/","title":{"rendered":"Slugger O&#8217;Toole: Blogging in a Combat Zone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a222'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><P align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &#8220;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.shanemacgowan.com\/lyrics\/irishrover.shtml\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">There was Slugger O&#8217;Toole who was drunk as a rule <\/FONT><\/A><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <A href=\"http:\/\/www.shanemacgowan.com\/lyrics\/irishrover.shtml\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">And fighting Bill Tracey from Dover <\/FONT><\/A><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <A href=\"http:\/\/www.shanemacgowan.com\/lyrics\/irishrover.shtml\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">And your man Mick McCann from the banks of the Bann <\/FONT><\/A><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <A href=\"http:\/\/www.shanemacgowan.com\/lyrics\/irishrover.shtml\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">Was the skipper of the Irish Rover&#8230;<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">&nbsp;&#8220;<\/FONT><BR><\/FONT><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"4\"> The question here is whether blogging&nbsp;is good for&nbsp;peace&#8230; in Sri Lanka?&nbsp; in Kashmir?&nbsp; in the Middle East?&nbsp; <A href=\"http:\/\/media.skybuilders.com\/lydon\/slugger.mp3\">Here<\/A>&#8216;s the start of an <A href=\"http:\/\/media.skybuilders.com\/lydon\/slugger.mp3\">answer<\/A>, from Belfast.<BR><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Blogs like <A href=\"http:\/\/sluggerotoole.com\">Slugger O&#8217;Toole<\/A> and its offspring are a new diplomatic channel easing &#8220;the troubles&#8221; in Northern Ireland.&nbsp; Author Mick Fealty conceived the blog a year ago as a sort of newsletter <IMG hspace=\"15\" src=\"http:\/\/www.analisidifesa.it\/images5\/sinfein.jpg\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"15\"> to the legendary sailor who went down with the ship, <A href=\"http:\/\/www.shanemacgowan.com\/lyrics\/irishrover.shtml\">&#8220;The Irish Rover,&#8221;<\/A> between Cork and New York in 1806.&nbsp; <A href=\"http:\/\/sluggerotoole.com\">Slugger O&#8217;Toole, the blog,<\/A> was to be an open and independent conversation, a refuge from soundbite television, from established biases in the Belfast papers and &#8220;the limitations of the printed page.&#8221;&nbsp; Widely read now in Ireland, England and the U.S., <A href=\"http:\/\/sluggerotoole.com\">Slugger O&#8217;Toole<\/A> overflows with Comments on the finest details of an ancient conflict (lots of back-and-forth this week about the wearing of IRA T-shirts featuring the image of a sniper).&nbsp; <A href=\"http:\/\/sluggerotoole.com\">Slugger<\/A> is a space where new voices emerge, using both Gaelic and English languages.&nbsp; It&#8217;s a place where &#8220;Catholics and Protestants are fairly comfortable,&#8221; Mick Fealty <A href=\"http:\/\/media.skybuilders.com\/lydon\/slugger.mp3\">told me<\/A>.&nbsp; &#8220;At least they&#8217;re in the same room.&#8221;&nbsp; <IMG hspace=\"15\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newsmedianews.com\/images\/uup.gif\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"15\">Which is not to say that minds are changed, but Mick Fealty suspects that the rhythm and rules of his blog help people out of ruts.&nbsp; &#8220;The dynamic of the blog keeps people moving forward,&#8221; he said.&nbsp; &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t encourage people to linger over hurt or offense.&#8221;&nbsp; He keeps a light rein on personal flaming.&nbsp; Soccer rules apply: &#8220;play the ball, not the man.&#8221;&nbsp; In Mick Fealty&#8217;s own comments, the polite, persistent pressure is on (Protestant) Unionists to put forth a vision of the future beyond simply &#8220;no&#8221; to (Catholic) Republican nationalism.&nbsp; &#8220;There&#8217;s been a huge deficit on the Unionist side of the discourse,&#8221; <A href=\"http:\/\/media.skybuilders.com\/lydon\/slugger.mp3\">he says<\/A>.&nbsp; So he combines honest brokerage with a certain amount of political judgment.
