{"id":668,"date":"2004-10-26T02:44:38","date_gmt":"2004-10-26T06:44:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/longestnow\/2004\/10\/26\/despite-flaws-users-hope-for-domin"},"modified":"2004-10-26T02:44:38","modified_gmt":"2004-10-26T06:44:38","slug":"despite-flaws-users-hope-for-dominance-of-wiktionary-mediawiki","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/longestnow\/2004\/10\/26\/despite-flaws-users-hope-for-dominance-of-wiktionary-mediawiki\/","title":{"rendered":"Despite flaws, users hope for dominance of Wiktionary, Mediawiki"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a569'><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The O&#8217;Reilly Network&#8217;s <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Scott Hacker<\/span> wrote a piece on<br \/>\nwiki support yesterday,&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onlamp.com\/pub\/wlg\/5794\">Where&#8217;s the Movable Type of the Wiki World?<\/a>,<br \/>\npublished with some eloquent commentary by visitors at the end.<\/p>\n<p>Hacker suggests the Wiki world needs its own elegant, soup-to-nuts<br \/>\nwikiproject, comparing the chaos of wiki communities and documentation<br \/>\nto that of the blogging world pre-Movable Type.&nbsp; He shopped around<br \/>\nfor a wiki to use for an <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">educational project<\/span> (which was itself inspired<br \/>\nby WikiPedia, retro camel caps and all), and finally settled on<br \/>\nMediaWiki.&nbsp; Unfortunately, its &#8220;scattered and obtuse&#8221;<br \/>\ndocumentation,&nbsp; &#8220;stupidly difficult&#8221; customizations, and lack of<br \/>\ncompact, neatly packaged documentation for end-users, left him<br \/>\ncold.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>U.Penn student <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Swarat Chaudhury<\/span>, writing for India&#8217;s venerable<br \/>\npaper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestatesman.net\/page.news.php?clid=24&amp;theme=&amp;usrsess=1&amp;id=58137\">The<br \/>\nStatesman<\/a>, is a bit more optimistic:<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">&#8220;<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Wikipedia has spawned a sister project called Wiktionary<br \/>\n(http:\/\/www.wiktionary. org), a collaborative multilingual dictionary<br \/>\nwith pronunciations, etymology and quotations.
