{"id":278,"date":"2005-12-31T03:06:24","date_gmt":"2005-12-31T07:06:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/longestnow\/2005\/12\/31\/forces-of-nature-entertainment-fun"},"modified":"2005-12-31T03:06:24","modified_gmt":"2005-12-31T07:06:24","slug":"forces-of-nature-entertainment-fun-and-vice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/longestnow\/2005\/12\/31\/forces-of-nature-entertainment-fun-and-vice\/","title":{"rendered":"Forces of nature : entertainment (fun and vice)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a1175'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Food Force<\/span>, the recent release from the blockbuster UN Games Division (not its real name), is a ~<a href=\"http:\/\/www.food-force.com\/index.php\/game\/downloads\/\">200MB download<\/a> (PC\/Mac), but it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.watercoolergames.org\/archives\/000381.shtml\">rocks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings us to the first of <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">a set<\/span> of <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">forces of nature<\/span> : <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">entertainment<\/span><br \/>\n&#8212; just good, clean fun.&nbsp; There are many real voids in the<br \/>\nentertainment world; there is precious little in the way of pure Fun.<br \/>\nIf you compare today&#8217;s parched digital \/ isolated-family-unit<br \/>\nmicrocosms with the networked social environments of Rio, Barcelona,<br \/>\nSuriname, or Tel Aviv, you&#8217;ll understand what I mean. <\/p>\n<p>There is also the ever smirk-inducing world of entertainment via <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">vice<\/span>.<br \/>\nIt tickles a related but quite different set of longings; and while<br \/>\nplay was surely the first hobby, back when all forms of entertainment<br \/>\nwere the same, vice supposedly gave rise to the first &#8216;professions&#8217;,<br \/>\nonce it acquired its own <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">concept<\/span> and niche.
