{"id":254,"date":"2005-11-29T20:33:59","date_gmt":"2005-11-30T00:33:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/longestnow\/2005\/11\/29\/gaming-rockstars-etc\/"},"modified":"2005-11-29T20:33:59","modified_gmt":"2005-11-30T00:33:59","slug":"gaming-rockstars-etc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/longestnow\/2005\/11\/29\/gaming-rockstars-etc\/","title":{"rendered":"Gaming, rockstars, etc"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a1148'><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Dave&#8217;s <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">fabulous<\/span> new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edery.org\/\">game-industry blog<\/a><br \/>\n(now that he&#8217;s the associate dir @ MIT&#8217;s <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">gaming lab<\/span>, it&#8217;s about time he<br \/>\ngot one up), I&#8217;ve been following some of the recent scandals and events<br \/>\nin the latest generation of games, something I haven&#8217;t done since<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">E3<\/span>.&nbsp;&nbsp; And today I was lucky enough to spend an hour with <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Cory Ondrejka<\/span> at Berkman, someone I haven&#8217;t seen since <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Accelerating Chang<\/span>e this time last year.<\/p>\n<p>So I was reading up on the latest changes in <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Second Life<\/span>, and ran<br \/>\nacross this insightful take on Rockstar, from the cybersex-oriented <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackloveinteractive.com\/84\/tiki-view_blog_post.php?blogId=2&amp;postId=5\">Black Love Interactive<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px; font-style: italic;\">[I]f they think &#8220;hot coffee&#8221; was explicit, it&#8217;s woefully juvenile and tame<br \/>\ncompared to the real AO titles- which typically have the balls to go AO<br \/>\nand not try to be &#8220;cool and dangerous&#8221; in a mainstream game marketed to<br \/>\nteens and sold through Wal-Mart&#8230; a rather *sleazy* market to try to<br \/>\nbe &#8220;edgy&#8221; in. Their brand image reminds me of the rebellious teenager<br \/>\nwho hangs out with younger kids so that he can be a badass and get<br \/>\nrespect even though all of his peers think he&#8217;s a huge loser.
