{"id":3457,"date":"2022-08-29T10:48:15","date_gmt":"2022-08-29T14:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/loebmusic\/?p=3457"},"modified":"2022-08-29T10:49:17","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T14:49:17","slug":"bel-canto-and-beyond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/loebmusic\/2022\/08\/29\/bel-canto-and-beyond\/","title":{"rendered":"Bel canto and beyond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Eda Kuhn Loeb Music Library has recently acquired the personal collection of Italian accompanist, conductor and vocal coach <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luigi_Ricci_(vocal_coach)\">Luigi Ricci<\/a> (1893-1981): printed scores containing vocal exercises, opera and other large-scale vocal genres, instrumental music and songs, many of them annotated, some heavily, by Ricci and others. Eda Kuhn Loeb Music Library Mus 15.17<\/p><\/div>\n<p>From an early age, Ricci provided piano accompaniment at voice lessons given by baritone Antonio Cotogni, whose performances of several Verdi operas were supervised by the composer himself. Eda Kuhn Loeb Music Library, Harvard University<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The impact of Luigi Ricci on twentieth-century opera performance is summarized by Renata Scotto in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.operanews.com\/Opera_News_Magazine\/2016\/7\/Departments\/Backstory__Renata_Scotto.html\">2016\u00a0<em>Opera News<\/em> article<\/a>: &#8220;\u201cWhen I teach, I\u2019m thinking of my own teachers and of the great conductors I learned so much from. They gave to me so much\u2014and I gave to them a lot, I believe. In the beginning, I had a great teacher\u2014Luigi Ricci, who had been a coach at Teatro di Roma and did\u00a0<em>Butterfly\u00a0<\/em>with Puccini. I got directly what Puccini told him. I feel it\u2019s my duty to pass it on to young singers. Ricci spoke a lot about the words. Puccini was very much interested in the interpretation, the passion, the love. \u2018Un bel d\u00ec\u2019 is not an aria\u2014you tell a\u00a0<em>vision<\/em>. Ricci told me, \u2018Don\u2019t\u00a0<em>sing<\/em>\u00a0too much\u2014don\u2019t make a big sound. Have a vision of that\u00a0<em>nave bianca.<\/em>\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He is best known today for interpreting Puccini and Verdi, but Ricci&#8217;s collection also includes scores, most of them enthusiastically annotated, of scores by Shostakovich, Wagner, Mozart and many others.
