For the 260th birthday of music\u2019s favorite Freemason, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart<\/a>, here is a recent acquisition: \u00a0Recueil de chansons des franc-ma\u00e7ons \u00e0 l’usage de la Loge de Ste Geneviefve<\/a>. A very rare collection of sixty Masonic songs, it was published in Paris in 1763 and sold by Charles-Antoine Jombert.<\/p>\n

This volume is in four parts. The first, which does not have a title, contains such songs as the florid Chanson des maitres\u00a0and a\u00a0combative march called La main aux armes. Part two describes Les plaisirs de la Ma\u00e7onnerie, specifically Une aimable fraternit\u00e9, La sagesse et l\u2019innocence and Une \u00e9galit\u00e9 parfaite. Part three contains Noels en C fol ut (Fidele a Dieu bon citoyen), and part four Noels en G r\u00e9 sol (Amis de la concorde).<\/p>\n

This item joins several other collections of Masonic songs at\u00a0the Isham Memorial Library, the special collections library located with the Eda Kuhn Loeb Music Library. These include\u00a0The Masonick minstrel<\/a> (Dedham, MA: 1816) and\u00a0Auswahl maurerischer Ges\u00e6nge<\/a> (compiled in Germany\u00a0between 1803 and 1805).<\/p>\n

It is perhaps an overstatement to call Mozart a full-fledged political Mason. He was active in his local lodge, Zur Wohlth\u00e4tigkeit,\u00a0and enjoyed close friendships with\u00a0his Masonic brothers. He composed music\u00a0for the lodge\u2019s meetings, such as the cantata Die Maurerfreude, K. 471, for tenor, male chorus and orchestra, and the Maurerische Trauermusik, K. 477, which went through\u00a0arrangements for\u00a0many permutations of instruments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
