{"id":1045,"date":"2011-01-28T21:47:42","date_gmt":"2011-01-29T01:47:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/lianaleahy\/?p=1045"},"modified":"2011-01-31T11:03:26","modified_gmt":"2011-01-31T15:03:26","slug":"tech-moms-navigating-your-career-with-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/lianaleahy\/2011\/01\/28\/tech-moms-navigating-your-career-with-kids\/","title":{"rendered":"She\u2019s Geeky: Tech Moms \u2013 Navigating your career with kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I led this session at the end of day one of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shesgeeky.org\/\">She&#8217;s Geeky<\/a>. \u00a0I chose to have my session in the teepee but it turned out to be too small to hold the group and awfully hot inside. \u00a0So we all grabbed pillows and sat on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>There were seven women including myself. \u00a0Half of us have school age children and the other half have toddlers and babies. \u00a0So there was lots of\u00a0reminiscing, personal stories and advice.<\/p>\n<p>I brought up a topic that I&#8217;ve been struggling with&#8230; I call it Mom Fog. \u00a0As a coder, it is very difficult to reconcile logical thinking for your job with the very emotional task of raising children. \u00a0Since the birth of my son, I find that at last my Mom Fog is beginning to lift. \u00a0I don&#8217;t think it is a coincidence that I&#8217;m getting more sleep these days, but likely there is a hormonal aspect to it as well.<\/p>\n<p>The women tell me that this is a phenomenon that gets better about a year after birth, but never completely goes away. \u00a0And we talked about strategies to capitalize on our manic, ADD days with the opportunities for intense focus that seem to ebb and flow throughout the month.<\/p>\n<p>We even got to hear from the kids who attended today&#8217;s event who talked about what it was like to have a &#8220;tech mom&#8221;. \u00a0It was moving to hear them talk about their positive experiences and I hope that my kids will talk about me that way someday.<\/p>\n<p>There are some mom friendly, task management applications\u00a0out there to check out: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/backpackit.com\/\">Backpack<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/backpackit.com\/\">Cozi<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/culturedcode.com\/things\/\">Things<\/a>, and organizing advice from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flylady.net\/\">FlyLady<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As working moms, a number of us are lucky to have supportive partners and we are encouraged to trust them with our children. \u00a0Along those lines, it&#8217;s important to remember to build a\u00a0village\u00a0to support you. \u00a0Ask for help. \u00a0And accept help when it is offered.<\/p>\n<p>This morning I was hesitant to introduce this topic since this was my very first She&#8217;s Geeky event. \u00a0But I&#8217;m truly glad that I did. \u00a0I got some much needed validation today. \u00a0And I&#8217;m hoping the other moms got a lot out of it too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I led this session at the end of day one of She&#8217;s Geeky. \u00a0I chose to have my session in the teepee but it turned out to be too small to hold the group and awfully hot inside. \u00a0So we all grabbed pillows and sat on the floor.
