So these countries that are sending people in \u2014 do you think they are sending us their finest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The facts: Trump is again distorting the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, which uses a computer lottery system to randomly issue up to 50,000 immigrant visas each year to qualified applicants from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. Countries aren\u2019t \u201csending us\u201d anybody. Individuals submit applications, and those eligible must meet certain requirements and pass a security background check.\u00a0<em><strong><a class=\"nwv\" title=\"Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lawschool.cornell.edu\/faculty\/bio_stephen_yale-loehr.cfm\" target=\"nw\">Stephen W. Yale-Loehr, who teaches immigration law at Cornell Law School<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, told us: \u201cAmong other things, the consular officer must make sure the individual is not \u2018inadmissible.\u2019 This means that the person has not committed a crime, doesn\u2019t have a serious health problem, isn\u2019t a terrorist, hasn\u2019t committed fraud, and hasn\u2019t overstayed in the U.S. before.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eugene Kiely and D&#8217;Angelo Gore, May 30, 2018\u00a0&#8211; &#8220;The claim: \u201cThink of it, a lottery.
