At Harvard Law School this fall, my classes in American Jury and Internet and Society began an experiment in small-group deliberation on difficult subjects. Over the semester, we deliberated gender and racial discrimination, the new Harvard-wide Title IX standard for sexual misconduct, legalization of marijuana, and the advisibility of hosting the Olympics in Boston. \u00a0We started a wave.<\/p>\n
I and my students are now taking the discussion university-wide. through the medium of the Harvard Extension School and HarvardX. We invite you to join our discussion.<\/p>\n
The course, \u201cDeliberations in Cyberspace<\/a>\u201d at the Extension School will begin February 11, 2015. The course is open for free to all Harvard students and to all others for a fee. Enrolled students will receive academic credit for the course from Harvard Extension School and may receive credit at their home schools by petition to them.\u00a0 The course, \u201cJuryX<\/a>\u201d, at HarvardX will commence on March 10, 2015. \u00a0It is non-credit and is free and open to all.<\/p>\n I invite you, your colleagues, your students, friends and\u00a0 parents to participate in these classes.\u00a0 Ours is a call to reclaim deliberation as means of governing ourselves. We invite you to explore the concept of jury in both theory and practice. Learn about jury in political theory and history. Engage as co-learners in small-group deliberations. Gain hands-on live experience of persuading and being persuaded. You will learn about your colleagues, your university and yourself in relation to others.
