The government<br \/>\ndecided not to appeal the order. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">The<br \/>\nday before the government announced the compensation, the 1984 Sikh<br \/>\nRehabilitation Action Committee Punjab (Bathinda Zone) released a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/2005\/20050913\/punjab1.htm#14\">press statement<\/a>&nbsp;asserting<br \/>\nthat the state government misled victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh pogroms<br \/>\n&#x201C;like the previous governments in the state&#x201D;. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">In<br \/>\nthe press statement, Karam Singh, the committee president, said about<br \/>\n3,000 Sikh families were ruined in the 1984 pogroms, of which a large<br \/>\nnumber were settled in Punjab. <\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><font face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><em>He<br \/>\nsaid about 446 such families had shifted to Bathinda, a list of which<br \/>\nthe Deputy Commissioner had already sent to the state government. Out<br \/>\nof these, 14 families were yet to be issued cards.
