On September 8, Balwinder Singh, a man under trial, was beaten<\/a> by Punjab police officers at a Ludhiana court and prevented from appearing before the judge. <\/font><\/p>\n

An
\nIndian Express correspondent saw seven to eight police officers shoving
\nBalwinder Singh into a van. He shouted to the correspendent:<\/font><\/p>\n

My
\nname is Balwinder Singh. I am facing murder charges. Today I was
\nbrought from the Patiala jail to be presented before the judge who is
\nlooking into my case. But without taking me to the judge, the police
\nhave taken another date for my case. They have done this in connivance
\nwith the opposite party and have also taken money from them to delay
\nthe hearing in my case. Police have done this despite my protest, and
\nhave also forcibly taken my signatures on the court papers.<\/em><\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The police officers then pushed Balwinder Singh into the van and began kicking, hitting, and slapping him. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nthrough this, the policemen could be heard abusing hard and shouting,
\n‘‘Take him to the chowki. We will teach him a lesson.’’<\/em><\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
