The Amnesty International paper suggested that the EU use the September 7 <A href=\"http:\/\/web.amnesty.org\/library\/Index\/ENGASA200332005\">EU-India summit<\/A> to encourage India to set an example for the rest of Asia and abolish the death penalty. <\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><EM>&#8220;As the EU is already engaged in a persistent effort to seek abolition of the death penalty around the world and has for this purpose drawn up policy guidelines towards third countries, it should take the opportunity of the Summit to engage India in this process,&#8221; Dick Oosting, Director of Amnesty International&#x2019;s EU Office said.<\/EM><\/FONT><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Amnesty International also urged the EU to request that the Indian government declare an immediate moratorium on executions and make public information relating to current and past death sentences and executions.<\/FONT><\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Amnesty International has sent a briefing paper to the UK Presidency of the European Union stating that India should abolish the death penalty.
