During a July 25 hearing on the Khalra muder case<\/A>, Additional District Sessions <\/FONT>Judge Bhupinder Singh summoned Faridkot Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Singh to <\/FONT>make a statement. Jaswant Singh Khalra was a human rights activist who was abducted <\/FONT>from his home by the police in 1995. (For a full background<\/A>, see the March 2005 <\/FONT>Dispatch.) <\/FONT><\/P>

Ravinder Singh was summoned to make a statement based on the statements of SPO <\/FONT>Kuldeep Singh, the key witness in the Khalra case. <\/FONT><\/P>

Kuldeep Singh, SPO, had alleged in the court of Mr Ravinder Singh, who was <\/FONT>Magistrate at Jalandhar then, that Jaswant Singh Khalra’s wife, Paramjit Kaur, had <\/FONT>offered Rs 50,000 to him to lodge a complaint against the police.<\/FONT><\/EM><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE>

Kuldeep Singh later denied this statement, saying that the accused police officers <\/FONT>intimidated him into giving a statement that he had been offered Rs 50,000 by <\/FONT>Paramjit Kaur.<\/FONT><\/P>

The next hearing for the case is August 10 and Ravinder Singh was will appear before <\/FONT>the court on August 31.<\/FONT>
