Allegations of Torture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a428'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial\"><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\">Simranjit Singh Mann, leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Mann) and former Member of Parliament, was <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/articleshow\/1142162.cms\"><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\">arrested<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\"> on June 14 for making speeches in favor of an independent Sikh state.&nbsp; He was charged with sedition.&nbsp; In the following days, the police arrested other members of his party.<BR><BR>Although Mann was placed in jucidial custody, the police procured his custody against normal procedure.&nbsp; While he was under police custody, Mann stated that he was <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/2005\/20050616\/punjab1.htm\"><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\">tortured<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\"> and was going to be extrajudicially <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\"><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\">executed<\/FONT>:<BR><BR><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/FONT><br \/>\n<DIV style=\"MARGIN-LEFT: 40px\"><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\"><FONT><SPAN style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial\"><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\">After getting a communication from Mr Mann, that he feared a threat to life as he was abused and tortured by police personnel while being taken from one place to another for interrogation, Deputy Commissioner, Ropar, H.I.S Garewal, reached the spot and took him in his official car from Ropar to<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\"> Central Jail, Ludhiana.<\/FONT> <\/SPAN><\/FONT><BR><\/FONT><FONT><SPAN style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial\"><\/SPAN><\/FONT><BR><\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\"><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\">Talking to The Tribune over phone on the way to Ludhiana along with Mr Mann, the Deputy Commissioner, said that he was taking Mr Mann to the Central Jail, Ludhiana, as he had received a complaint of torture by police personnel.<\/FONT><BR><\/FONT><BR><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial\"><\/SPAN><\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial\"><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\">On June 17, the magistrate placed Mann in <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/2005\/20050618\/punjab1.htm#1\"><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\">judicial custody<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\"> for 14 days.&nbsp;
