{"id":43,"date":"2005-05-15T20:36:55","date_gmt":"2005-05-16T00:36:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/jaskaran\/2005\/05\/15\/woman-tortured-by-police\/"},"modified":"2005-05-15T20:36:55","modified_gmt":"2005-05-16T00:36:55","slug":"woman-tortured-by-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/jaskaran\/2005\/05\/15\/woman-tortured-by-police\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman tortured by police"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a408'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><P><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><A href=\"http:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/2005\/20050509\/punjab1.htm#4\">Reshma<\/A>, a seventeen-year old brick kiln worker from Teja Bhatt village in Patiala, was tortured by police after she was picked up for questioning relating to her sister&#8217;s murder. <\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">On May 7, Reshma was picked up by police during their investigation of the sudden death of Kamlesh, her older sister. The police then electrically shocked Rashema on her right breast, her lips, and her right ear. She was later admitted to the Rajindera Hospital, where she was declared out of danger. <\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Sharanjit Singh, the Station House Officer of the Sadar police station, is accused of the torture. He said that Reshma was picked up for questioning because she was sleeping on the same cot as her sister Kamlesh the day she disappeared, and&nbsp;added that a female constable and Reshma&#8217;s aunt accompanied her to the police station. It was later&nbsp;found that Kamlesh was&nbsp;killed by her husband.<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Workers from the brick kiln and members of the Sudhar Sabha, a social organization, staged a dharna in front of the Rajindera Hospital. The Sudhar Sabha has urged the Patiala MP to take action against the accused offiers. <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">The urban unit of the BJP has condemned the torture and the silence of the Congress government, and has demanded punishment for the guilty officers, a CBI probe into the incident, and Rs 5 lakh compensation to Reshema.<\/FONT> <\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">In a departamental inquiry conducted by the Superintendent of Police, Sharanjit Singh was found <A href=\"http:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/2005\/20050511\/punjab1.htm#7\">guilty<\/A> of torture. AS Rai, the Senior Superintendent of Police, then said that he would decide whether the verdict of this inquiry would be sufficient to take action against Sharanjit Singh, and added that it would take <A href=\"http:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/2005\/20050510\/punjab1.htm#15\">more time<\/A>&nbsp;as he considers the medical records and questioning of Reshema by police. <\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P><Font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">On May 14, SHO Sharanjit Singh was reportedly <A href=\"http:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/2005\/20050515\/punjab1.htm#5\">transferred<\/A>&nbsp;to police lines and SSP Rai issued show cause notices to two other policemen in the case.
