In a press conference on May 10, Narain Singh Chaura accused Burail Jail officials of physically and mentally torturing<\/A> those under trial, especially Sikh and Punjabi prisoners, and of showing disrespect for the Guru Granth Sahib. Narain Singh Chaura, a Sikh social and political activist, is accused of involvement in the 2004 Burail jailbreak, and was recently released on bail. While under police custody, he was severely tortured<\/A> by police. <\/FONT><\/P>

“They are being tortured in violation of the jail manual and rules and orders of the High Court. They are being discriminated when it comes to providing medical treatment, meeting visitors, canteen and library facilities and offering prayers at Gurdwara Sahib on the jail premises,’’<\/EM><\/FONT><\/P>
\n

“Disrespect is shown to Gutkas [Sikh prayer books] on the pretext of search and special langar on the occasion of Gurpurb is not allowed,” Chaura said.<\/EM> <\/FONT><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE>
