{"id":410,"date":"2005-01-06T02:06:38","date_gmt":"2005-01-06T06:06:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/jaskaran\/2005\/01\/06\/nanavati-commission-to-submit-report"},"modified":"2005-01-06T02:06:38","modified_gmt":"2005-01-06T06:06:38","slug":"nanavati-commission-to-submit-report-by-end-of-january","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/jaskaran\/2005\/01\/06\/nanavati-commission-to-submit-report-by-end-of-january\/","title":{"rendered":"Nanavati Commission to submit report by end of January"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a352'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><P dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">The Nanavati Commission <A href=\"http:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/news\/181_1179802,00080001.htm\">investigating<\/A> the 1984 massacres is preparing to submit its report to the Union Home Ministry by the end of the month. <\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><EM>&#8220;The evidence does indicate a pattern in which the riots took place and the pattern in which the attacks took place on the Sikhs,&#8221; Justice GT Nanavati said, refusing to elaborate on the merits of the evidence taken into consideration by it.<\/EM><\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><EM>The Commission, the second one to probe into the riots after Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission, is expected to give its finding on the causes of the riots, whether it was instigated by politicians as also the role of the police and law enforcing agencies.<\/EM><\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><EM>He said the report of the Commission would be recommendatory in nature and it was for the Government to consider it and take appropriate action.<\/EM><\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><EM>Asked how would the report be different from that of the Mishra Commission, Justice Nanavati said more material was produced before him relating to the riots than the earlier Commission.<\/EM><\/FONT><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">The Nanavati Commission will consider the role of the police and local politicians in the riots, especially how and when they responded. The commission will also investigate allegations that the army was not sent in time to stop the massacres. As part of its investigation, the commission has examined many Congress leaders.
