The Nanavati-Shah commission, investigating the Godhra carnage and Gujarat pogroms, rejected<\/A><\/FONT> the state government’s plea<\/A><\/FONT> to adjourn hearings:<\/FONT><\/P>

The G.T. Nanavati and K.G. Shah Commission ruled that the proceedings could go simultaneously with the collection of additional evidence under the new notification issued by the Government last week. There was no need to postpone the ongoing cross-examination of police officials on the basis of the affidavits filed by them earlier.<\/EM><\/FONT><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE>

The state government had requested more time for collecting evidence given the expansion in the scope of the Commission.  Last week, the state government expanded<\/A><\/FONT> the Commission’s terms of reference to include an investigation into the acts of senior state government officials, relating to the Godhra train carnage and subsequent 2002 Gujarat pogroms against Muslims.
