The Gujarat government has expanded the scope<\/A><\/FONT> of the Nanavati panel to include an investigation into the acts of the Chief Minister and other senior state government officials, relating to the Godhra train carnage and subsequent 2002 Gujarat pogroms against Muslims.  The Commission’s term ends in December, unless the state government extends it.  The Commission has already experienced several delays<\/A><\/FONT> because of the failure of police officers to appear for cross-examination.<\/FONT><\/P>

In addition to this huge investigative burden, the same commission is responsible for inquiring into the 1984 Pogroms against Sikhs.  The 1984 section<\/A><\/FONT> of the blog follows recent developments in this inquiry.<\/FONT><\/P>

In other Gujarat news, the court investigating the Best Bakery case, after the Supreme Court ordered a retrial outside of Gujarat, recently issued non-bailable warrants<\/A><\/FONT> against 10 of the accused.  This case deals with the burning alive of 14 Muslims during the 2002 pogroms:<\/FONT><\/P>

So far only 10 of the 21 accused have been arrested, while one is out on bail. Mr. Thipsay [Additional Sessions Judge] said that now the concentration should be on the arrest of the accused. Meanwhile, the issue of the public prosecutor has become more complicated.<\/EM><\/FONT><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE>
