Last week, thousands of people protested<\/A><\/FONT> in Handwara, Kashmir over the police torture of a 17-year old Kashmiri school girl:<\/FONT><\/P>

Police used batons, tear gas and fired into the air to break up protesters as they marched to the main square. <\/EM><\/FONT><\/P>
\n

Fifteen people, including nine students, were injured. <\/EM><\/FONT><\/P>
\n

The protesters say the 17-year-old girl, Hussaina Ara, was detained by police and tortured on 2 July. Police have not commented on the detention. <\/EM><\/FONT><\/P>
\n

The protesters demanded action against the police officers they alleged carried out the torture.<\/EM><\/FONT><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE>

After Hussaina’s detention, a local news agency reported that she had been admitted to a hospital following a three-hour police interrogation.  Another news agency elaborated on her injuries:<\/FONT><\/P>
