15 accused have surrendered<\/A><\/FONT> in a case arising out of the 2002 Gujarat pogroms against Muslims:<\/FONT><\/P>

The 15 persons are mostly local BJP-VHP activists who had allegedly killed and burnt 23 persons in Delol village of Panchmahals district on March 1, 2002 during a VHP-sponsored bandh after the Godhra train carnage.<\/EM><\/FONT><\/P>
\n

The 23 people, mostly members of one extended family, were confronted by BJP-VHP mobs outside the village. They were attacked with swords and burnt.<\/EM><\/FONT><\/P>
\n

Eyewitnesses named 21 accused in all. The other six accused were arrested during the last six months, police sources said. Thursday’s surrender followed a move by a local court to declare them absconders and attach their properties.<\/EM><\/FONT><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE>

The Supreme Court had ordered an investigation into the massacre, in response to a petition filed by the witnesses before the National Human Rights Commission(NHRC).<\/FONT><\/P>

In the Dawood<\/A><\/FONT> case, where the relatives of British citizens killed during the pogroms sued Modi and 13 others for genocide, the court has adjourned<\/A><\/FONT> the petition until July 31 to give the accused time to respond.<\/FONT><\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
