{"id":291,"date":"2004-04-21T11:10:44","date_gmt":"2004-04-21T15:10:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/jaskaran\/2004\/04\/21\/election-politics-take-precedence-ov"},"modified":"2004-04-21T11:10:44","modified_gmt":"2004-04-21T15:10:44","slug":"election-politics-take-precedence-over-human-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/jaskaran\/2004\/04\/21\/election-politics-take-precedence-over-human-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Election Politics Take Precedence over Human Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a182'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><P><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Unfortunately, members of the Sikh Forum&#x2014;working on issues relating to the 1984 pogroms against Sikhs&#x2014;have publicly <A href=\"http:\/\/sify.com\/cities\/delhi\/fullstory.php?id=13458502\">given support<\/A><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"> to candidates of the BJP, despite the BJP&#x2019;s role in the perpetration of pogroms against Muslims in Gujarat in 2002:<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><EM>Members of the Sikh Forum featured prominently alongside Mr Malhotra, indicating how close the 1984 anti-Sikh riots will be to the BJP&#8217;s agenda in South Delhi.<\/EM><\/FONT><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Sikh leaders, including those of the <A href=\"http:\/\/cities.expressindia.com\/fullstory.php?newsid=82332\">Akali Dal<\/A><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">, fail to see the similarities between the roles of the Congress Party and BJP in the perpetration of pogroms against minorities.&nbsp; Avtaar Singh Hit, president of the Akali Dal (Badal) unit in Delhi, commented on the candidacy of Sajjan Kumar, Jagdish Tytler and RK Anand, closely associated with either perpetrating the 1984&nbsp;carnage or protecting the perpetrators:<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><EM>&#x2018;&#x2018;It only shows the Congress still thinks about the Sikh community the way they did in 1984.
