P C Sharma, the former director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has recently been appointed by the Central government as a member of the National Human Rights Commission. This move has been protested by a variety of people and organizations. The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has <\/FONT>filed suit<\/FONT><\/A> challenging the appointment:<\/FONT><\/P>

PUCL submitted that the appointment of an NHRC member could be done only after obtaining the recommendations of a committee that included the leaders of the opposition in Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.<\/FONT><\/EM><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE>

As a result, the Supreme Court has asked the government to respond to this challenge.
