The news has been sparse on the human rights implications of the investigations into the Burail jailbreak by the accused in the assassination of Chief Minister Beant Singh.  Despite the numerous details on the police’s alleged findings, news articles have only casually referred to allegations of torture made by the attorney representing the alleged mastermind of the jailbreak—Narain Singh Chaura.  <\/FONT><\/P>

On Feb. 10, we reported<\/A><\/FONT> that the father of one of the escapees had filed a petition alleging that his son was extrajudicially executed by the police.  Today, buried in news about the issuance of non-bailable warrants<\/A><\/FONT> against the escapees, we learned that this petition was dismissed.  The CBI claimed that the father had no standing to bring the petition.  There is no other information on this issue.<\/FONT><\/P>

The Director General of Punjab police also stated today<\/A><\/FONT> that the escapees are still in the country.<\/FONT><\/P>
