Brad Adams, Executive Director, Asia Division, Human Rights Watch, addressed a <\/FONT>press conference<\/FONT><\/A> in Amritsar, co-hosted by the <\/FONT>Association of Families of the Disappeared in Punjab<\/FONT><\/A> (AFDP) and the <\/FONT>Committee for Information and Initiative in Punjab<\/FONT><\/A> (CIIP).  Adams expressed concern over the inordinate delay in the proceedings of the Punjab illegal cremations matter, pending before the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for eight years.  This impinged on the credibility of the NHRC:<\/FONT><\/P>

The commission had received the detailed CBI report in 1996, but had failed to appoint any investigation officer to look into the case so far, said Mr Adams.<\/EM><\/FONT><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE>

AFDP may intervene in the matter by filing a writ petition to expedite the NHRC investigation.<\/FONT>
