Perspectives from Victim Families and Human Rights Defenders<\/FONT><\/STRONG><\/P>

This panel event* will bring together victim families and human rights defenders from the regions of Gujarat, Kashmir, Nagaland and Punjab.  These survivors and defenders will share their experiences and findings in their fight for justice and accountability for violations perpetrated by the State, such as extrajudicial executions, disappearances and torture.<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/P>

<\/FONT><\/FONT> <\/P>
\n

The UN devised Principles for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights through Action to Combat Impunity include, among other things, the right to know, the right to justice and the right to reparation.  Can these rights be realized in India through the current constitutional and judicial frame work and the National Human Rights Commission?<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/P>
\n

<\/FONT><\/FONT> <\/P>
\n

This event hopes to generate a discussion on the limitations of the current legal system and on identifying successful strategies at the national and international level for combating impunity.  It will also aim to develop collaborative relationships to carry forward and maximize the impact of human rights defense.  We hope that you will be able to join in this event.<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/P>
