The High Court has summoned the <\/FONT>records<\/FONT><\/A> of the grant of pardon given to two police officers <\/FONT>last month<\/FONT><\/A> by the Governor of Punjab for their role in extrajudicial executions during the police counter-insurgency operations of 1984 to 1995. In 2001, DSP Jaspal Singh was convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison for the kidnapping and murder of Amrik Singh. Former SDP Sawaran Dass was sentenced to life in prison for the abduction and murder of the brother of an alleged militant. The court adjourned the matter until December 16.<\/FONT><\/P>

After the November 18 judgment <\/FONT>convicting<\/FONT><\/A> 2 police officers of the murder of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, and four others for abduction with intent to murder, among other crimes, the police chief of Punjab came out in full <\/FONT>support<\/FONT><\/A> of the convicted cops:<\/FONT><\/P>

Mr Virk said the police officers indicted by the court had sacrificed their lives to bring peace in the troubled state. Every effort would be made to help them and their families if they go for appeal in higher court.
