A former teenage sex worker with a criminal record has been ordained as a Church of England vicar.
In a revelation that will shock the traditionalist wing of the Anglican Church, Lord Carey, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, said that he encouraged the woman to undergo theological training after she expressed an interest in joining the priesthood four years ago.
In comments made to the House of Lords last week in favour of a review of the laws controlling prostitution, Lord Carey condemned the church for being “uncompassionate and uncaring”.
He said the priest in question would be willing to meet peers to talk about her past.
“She is quite convinced that present laws work against the chances of women breaking free of prostitution or escaping from a culture of violence that intimidates many women trapped in it.”
