{"id":973,"date":"2013-08-12T10:51:45","date_gmt":"2013-08-12T14:51:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/internetmonitor\/?p=973"},"modified":"2013-08-12T10:51:45","modified_gmt":"2013-08-12T14:51:45","slug":"imweekly-august-12-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/internetmonitor\/2013\/08\/12\/imweekly-august-12-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"#imweekly: August 12, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>China<\/strong><br \/>\nAfter multiple employees of Hong Kong-based company Phoenix Satellite Television <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/us-arm-major-chinese-media-company-facing-suit-19875595\">accused<\/a> the company&#8217;s former Washington, DC bureau chief of sexual harassment last week, nearly all mention of the scandal was scrubbed from the Chinese Internet.  <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.foreignpolicy.com\/posts\/2013\/08\/07\/sexual_assault_scandal_vanishes_from_chinese_internet\"><em>Foreign Policy<\/em> reports<\/a> that videos about the story have been blocked, while articles on the case have been taken down from China&#8217;s state-run news agency.  FP notes that the current CEO of Phoenix&#8217;s US subsidiary is the son of China&#8217;s former Vice Premier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pakistan<\/strong><br \/>\nPakistan&#8217;s Minister of State for Information Technology said last week that the country is working to develop software that will block <a href=\"http:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/586750\/youtube-ban-over-2700-such-websites-also-blocked-says-it-minister\/\">&#8220;objectionable content&#8221;<\/a> worldwide.  Once all such content is blocked, the minister stated, the country could theoretically lift its ban on YouTube.  The video-sharing site has been blocked in Pakistan since <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/elements\/2013\/08\/banistan-why-is-youtube-still-blocked-in-pakistan.html\">September 2012<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zimbabwe<\/strong><br \/>\nZimbabwe held presidential elections on July 31; the resulting re-election of President Robert Mugabe is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2013\/aug\/09\/robert-mugabe-election-win-zimbabwe\">hotly contested<\/a>.  During and after the elections, DDoS attacks took down <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techweekeurope.co.uk\/news\/zimbabwe-election-cyber-attacks-123938\">several human rights and media websites<\/a>.  In addition, Kubatana.net, which publishes human rights and civic information online and via email and SMS, was blocked from sending bulk text messages by an alleged government order.<\/p>\n<p><em>#imweekly is a regular round-up of news about Internet content controls and activity around the world.
