US officials and lawmakers have regularly accused Huawei of being a proxy for Chinese military and intelligence agencies and have encouraged public and private efforts to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.decryptedtech.com\/news\/huawei-leaves-the-us\">inhibit<\/a> Huawei\u2019s influence in the US.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iran<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Iranian Revolutionary Guard <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2013\/12\/05\/iran-arrests-16-internet-freedom-activists\/#:eyJzIjoidCIsImkiOiJfNnFyaDZ0MzY5M3NxZWd0YiJ9\">arrested<\/a> 16 cyber journalists and activists \u201caccused of working against the country&#8217;s national security, having ties with foreign \u2018enemy media\u2019 and designing anti-regime websites.\u201d The arrests followed on the heels of <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2013\/11\/21\/iran-blocks-cryptocat\/\">other recent government actions<\/a> that have infringed on Internet freedom, despite <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2013\/11\/06\/iran-social-media-ban\/\">promises<\/a> by the administration of President Hassan Rouhani to peel back repressive government policies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>USA<\/strong><br \/>\nDocuments leaked by Edward Snowden <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/nsa-tracking-cellphone-locations-worldwide-snowden-documents-show\/2013\/12\/04\/5492873a-5cf2-11e3-bc56-c6ca94801fac_story.html?hpid=z1\">revealed<\/a> that the US National Security Agency is collecting vast amounts of cellphone location data to track the whereabouts and movements of hundreds of millions of cellphones around the world. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2013\/dec\/04\/nsa-storing-cell-phone-records-daily-snowden\">wide scope<\/a> of the newly revealed programs has again raised concerns about privacy and is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/12\/05\/us\/politics\/documents-say-phones-outside-us-are-tracked.html?smid=tw-share&amp;_r=0\">likely to provoke<\/a> further resentment among foreign citizens and governments who have already expressed displeasure with US spying.<\/p>\n<p><em>#imweekly is a regular round-up of news about Internet content controls and activity around the world.
