{"id":1125,"date":"2013-11-12T09:37:36","date_gmt":"2013-11-12T13:37:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/internetmonitor\/?p=1125"},"modified":"2013-11-12T09:37:36","modified_gmt":"2013-11-12T13:37:36","slug":"imweekly-november-12-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/internetmonitor\/2013\/11\/12\/imweekly-november-12-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"#IMWeekly: November 12, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Australia<\/strong><br \/>\nA group of hackers claiming to be affiliated with an Indonesian branch of Anonymous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2013\/11\/05\/net-us-southeastasia-hacking-idUSBRE9A208V20131105\">defaced<\/a> dozens of websites belonging to Australian businesses with a message reading, \u201cStop Spying on Indonesia.\u201d The defacements appear to be in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.presstv.ir\/detail\/2013\/11\/04\/332841\/hackers-deface-australian-websites\/\">response<\/a> to recent news about Australia\u2019s involvement in US-led surveillance efforts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brazil<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Brazilian government issued a <a href=\"http:\/\/pesquisa.in.gov.br\/imprensa\/jsp\/visualiza\/index.jsp?jornal=1&amp;pagina=2&amp;data=05\/11\/2013\">decree<\/a> that made good on earlier promises to ensure that from now on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2013\/11\/07\/brazil_makes_it_official_gov_email_must_be_open_source_onpremises\/\">government email will be state run<\/a> and all government data will henceforth be stored in government facilities in Brazil. The move was made as a result of concerns about US spying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iran<\/strong><br \/>\nA growing number of high-level Iranian officials are calling for a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.trend.az\/regions\/iran\/2208150.html\">lift of the government ban on Facebook and Twitter<\/a>. The ban has been in place <a href=\"http:\/\/america.aljazeera.com\/articles\/2013\/11\/5\/iranian-govt-signingontosocialmedia.html\">since 2009<\/a> when social media was viewed as playing a key role in fueling civil unrest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Philippines<\/strong><br \/>\nHackers claiming to be affiliated with Anonymous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2013\/11\/06\/anon_philippines_defacement_protest\/\">defaced numerous government websites<\/a> to protest alleged government corruption. Five of the hackers were apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/gulfnews.com\/news\/world\/philippines\/masked-philippines-hackers-arrested-for-cyber-attacks-1.1251470\">arrested<\/a> later while protesting near the House of Representatives. The incident appeared to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2013\/11\/05\/net-us-southeastasia-hacking-idUSBRE9A208V20131105\">separate<\/a> from the abovementioned attack on Australian websites by Anonymous-affiliated hackers from Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p><em>#imweekly is a regular round-up of news about Internet content controls and activity around the world.
