{"id":1089,"date":"2013-10-21T12:01:03","date_gmt":"2013-10-21T16:01:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/internetmonitor\/?p=1089"},"modified":"2013-10-21T12:11:05","modified_gmt":"2013-10-21T16:11:05","slug":"imweekly-october-21-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/internetmonitor\/2013\/10\/21\/imweekly-october-21-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"#IMWeekly: October 21, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Belgium<\/strong><br \/>\nA <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/10\/18\/technology\/europe-moves-to-put-online-data-beyond-us-reach.html?smid=tw-share\">new measure<\/a> proposed by European lawmakers could require American companies to get clearance from European officials before \u201ccomplying with United States warrants seeking private data.\u201d A <a href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/news\/eu-data-privacy-nsa-326\/\">vote on the new measure<\/a>, which was proposed in response to recent revelations about American spying by the NSA, is scheduled for October 21.<\/p>\n<p><strong>France<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Le Monde<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/technologies\/article\/2013\/10\/21\/france-in-the-nsa-s-crosshair-phone-networks-under-surveillance_3499741_651865.html\">reported<\/a> that the NSA collected 70.3 million French telephone records during a 30-day period. In response, the French government <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/8301-202_162-57608391\/france-summons-u.s-ambassador-after-report-says-nsa-swept-up-70.3m-french-phone-records-in-a-month\/\">summoned the US ambassador<\/a> to demand an explanation for the NSA operation and to renew requests that the US cease its surveillance and enter into talks regarding protection of personal data. The report in Le Monde was co-written by Glenn Greenwald, the same reporter who <a href=\"http:\/\/hosted.ap.org\/dynamic\/stories\/E\/EU_FRANCE_NSA_SURVEILLANCE?SITE=AP&amp;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&amp;CTIME=2013-10-21-05-55-54\">originally revealed information about NSA surveillance based on leaks from Edward Snowden<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mexico<\/strong><br \/>\nA new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/international\/world\/nsa-hacked-email-account-of-mexican-president-a-928817.html\">report<\/a> by <em>Der Spiegel<\/em> found that the NSA has been systematically eavesdropping on the Mexican government for years, including hacking into the public email account of former president Felipe Calderon. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/10\/20\/world\/americas\/mexico-nsa-spying\/\">statement<\/a> by the Mexican foreign ministry <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/report-us-accessed-mexican-presidents-email-20629277\">condemned<\/a> the US surveillance operation, calling it \u201cunacceptable, illegitimate, and against Mexican and international law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Morocco<\/strong><br \/>\nOn October 19, the Moroccan government began <a href=\"http:\/\/globalvoicesonline.org\/2013\/10\/20\/morocco-censors-the-web-collateral-damage-allowed\/\">blocking a number of websites and social media platforms<\/a>, including Lakome, one of the country&#8217;s main independent media outlets. Lakome was believed to be the primary target of the government\u2019s blocking efforts, as the site&#8217;s editor, Ali Anouzla, was arrested on September 17 after publishing an article containing a link to a video by Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. Many journalists and advocacy groups have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/deeplinks\/2013\/10\/sometimes-link-just-link-free-ali-anouzla\">called for<\/a> Anouzla\u2019s release.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pakistan<\/strong><br \/>\nPakistani activists are using Twitter to <a href=\"http:\/\/globalvoicesonline.org\/2013\/10\/20\/pakistani-web-rallies-against-proposed-ban-on-whatsapp-viber-and-skype\/\">voice their opposition<\/a> to a <a href=\"http:\/\/gadgets.ndtv.com\/internet\/news\/pakistans-sindh-province-bans-skype-whatsapp-and-viber-over-security-concerns-427604\">three-month ban<\/a> of messaging apps&mdash;including Viber, WhatsApp, Tango, and Skype&mdash;implemented by Pakistani\u2019s Sindh provincial government (the province includes Karachi, Pakistan\u2019s largest city).<\/p>\n<p><em>#imweekly is a regular round-up of news about Internet content controls and activity around the world.
