This affects both financial and medical data as well as the contents of emails, chats, and other online communications.  <em>The Guardian<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2013\/sep\/05\/nsa-gchq-encryption-codes-security\">reports<\/a> that Hotmail, Yahoo, Google, and Facebook, among other service providers, may be affected.<\/p>\n<p><strong>United States<\/strong><br \/>\nFollowing close on <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/internetmonitor\/2013\/08\/28\/facebook-transparency-report-us-and-india-lead-in-data-requests\/\">Facebook&#8217;s heels<\/a>, Yahoo! released its first-ever <a href=\"http:\/\/info.yahoo.com\/transparency-report\/\">transparency report<\/a> last week.  The report covers government data requests from 17 countries, and discloses the total number of requests, the number of user accounts specified in those requests, and the number of requests for which Yahoo! disclosed both content and non-content data, among other statistics.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Vietnam<\/strong><br \/>\nEarlier this summer, Vietnam&#8217;s prime minister <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/internetmonitor\/2013\/08\/05\/imweekly-august-5-2013\/\">approved &#8220;Decree 72,&#8221;<\/a> which prohibits blogs and social media sites from &#8220;\u2018quote[ing]\u2019, \u2018gather[ing]\u2019 or summariz[ing] information from press organizations or government websites.&#8221;  The decree, which effectively outlaws political discussion online, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-23920541\">took effect<\/a> on September 1.<\/p>\n<p><em>#imweekly is a regular round-up of news about Internet content controls and activity around the world.
