Before beginning his studies at HLS, he was the co-founder and executive director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nglhrc.com\">National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission<\/a> in Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/today.law.harvard.edu\/eric-gitari-ll-m-18-litigating-landmark-lgbt-case-kenya-case-given-people-confidence-see-whats-possible\/\">a 2018 Harvard Law Today profile<\/a>, Gitari discussed his work with NGLHRC\u2014most notably, a case in Kenya that his NGO brought on behalf of two young men arrested in 2015 on suspicion of engaging in homosexual activities\u2014a felony in Kenya\u2014and distributing pornographic material.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, he described his work this summer, as a 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/hls.harvard.edu\/dept\/ils\/summer-work-abroad\/chayes-fellowships\/\">Chayes International Public Service Fellow<\/a>, monitoring the status of human rights for LGBTIQ persons in Gambia and Senegal, and his ongoing efforts to decriminalize same-sex relations in these and other African countries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/today.law.harvard.edu\/serious-challenges-with-some-green-shoots-of-hope\/\">Read &#8220;Serious challenges, with some green shoots of hope&#8221; on Harvard Law Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Photo: National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eric Gitari is a candidate for the\u00a0Doctorate in Juridical Science (S.J.D.)\u00a0at Harvard Law School.
