We soon discovered that the package contained previously unknown photographs of Spanish fortifications Havana, from 1899 or 1900. The photographs were sent to the photo conservators at the Weissman Preservation Center. Photograph conservator Elena Bulat contributed this post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2011\/03\/P1110355.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-847 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2011\/03\/P1110355-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2011\/03\/P1110355-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2011\/03\/P1110355-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2011\/03\/P1110355.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2011\/03\/Before-treatment.jpg\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-826 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2011\/03\/Before-treatment-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"306\" height=\"194\" \/> <\/a><span style=\"font-size: 10px\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A box with folded and stacked photographs arrived to the <a href=\"http:\/\/preserve.harvard.edu\/wpc.html\" target=\"_blank\">Weissman Preservation Center<\/a> from Houghton Library for treatment.\u00a0 The photographs were composite panoramas of Havana and envelopes with identifying information and one paper document containing information about the project.\u00a0 It was clear from the beginning that this project posed several challenges for us.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->We were lucky to have Saori Kawasumi (a second year student from the art Conservation Department of the Buffalo State University) working on this project during her 2010 summer internship at Weissman Preservation Center.<\/p>\n<p>There were eight groups of panoramas with some loose prints that needed to be organized, treated and appropriately housed. The photographs and the envelopes were extremely fragile.\u00a0 The gelatin emulsion was lifting off of the edges of the severely oxidized paper support.\u00a0 There were many losses of gelatin emulsion mostly on the edges. We used semi-custom Mylar locking sleeves to house each photograph.\u00a0 In order to keep the groups of panoramas together in each sleeve, we made three locking pockets using the ultrasonic welder and an added strip of Mylar.\u00a0 A special box was designed for the photographs. We were able to accommodate all 226 photographs and supportive paper documentation in this one box.
