target=\"_blank\"><em>America&#8217;s cities of sin<\/em><\/a> is an anthology of articles from popular 1940s and 50s magazines targeted for men. \u00a0It is a fascinating look at public sentiments of the time regarding drugs and sex. \u00a0The text of the articles is taken without abridgment\u00a0from the serial publications of <em>Male, Stag,<\/em> and <em>Eye<\/em>. \u00a0The editor, Noah Sarlat, states that these three magazines turned the spotlight onAmerican sins\u00a0including crime, prostitution, gambling, and drugs by writing exposes that informed the public.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2016\/09\/hooked-e1473858243823.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7626 size-medium\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2016\/09\/hooked-e1473858243823-228x300.jpg\" alt=\"hooked\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" anthology that takes articles exclusively dealing with drugs from <em>Challenge for Men Magazine<\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/id.lib.harvard.edu\/aleph\/013629538\/catalog\" target=\"_blank\">Man&#8217;s Magazine<\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0 Editor Phil Hirsch compiled a number of articles with extremely sensational titles such as<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;I Peddled Dope for Houston&#8217;s Cops!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Pep Pill Junkie&#8221;<\/strong> and<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;$500 a day Habit.&#8221;<\/strong> \u00a0If you have been reading these posts\u00a0regularly it may not surprise you to learn that\u00a0we have already processed a\u00a0few of the original issues of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/id.lib.harvard.edu\/aleph\/013629538\/catalog\" target=\"_blank\">Man&#8217;s Magazine<\/a>\u00a0which can be found in Hollis+. \u00a0The covers of all of these publications are designed to snag the viewer with pulpy\u00a0images which are accompanied by incendiary statements about sex, drugs, and death.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/id.lib.harvard.edu\/aleph\/014134263\/catalog\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7627 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2016\/09\/mans_mag_1-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"mans_mag_1\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\"
