This post is part of an ongoing series featuring recently cataloged items from the Julio Mario Santo Domingo Collection<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Originally a French lawyer, Georges Anquetil was also a journalist and publisher who was well known for unorthodox methods and anarchist leanings. \u00a0Early in his legal career he wrote under the name “Georges Evil.” \u00a0His career in journalism began at the French Mail around 1914 after he was disbarred. \u00a0After that he tried to launch various newspapers over the years mostly focusing on political satire though he\u00a0was not very successful except for\u00a0Le Grand Guignol, <\/i>which ran for about eight years. \u00a0We have an issue from 1925 in the collection where the cover appears to give their opinion of where various types of Evian water originate. \u00a0Any type of scandal, especially \"img0037\"<\/a>political, was Anquetil’s bread and butter for Le Grand Guignol<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This appetite for scandal was also true for most of Anquetil’s self publishing endeavors. \u00a0One that we discovered in the collection is\u00a0La maitresse l\u00e9gitime : essai sur le mariage polygamique de demain<\/a>. \u00a0It loosely translates to\u00a0Legitimate Mistress : Essay on polygamous marriage tomorrow<\/em> which\u00a0was essentially an attack on monogamy. \u00a0It was hugely controversial and consequently sold a lot of copies.<\/p>\n

\"Georges-Anquetil<\/a>\u00a0\"img0036\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Another scandalous book deeply rooted in satire was\u00a0Satan conduit le bal : roman pamphl\u00e9taire et philosophique des moeurs du temps<\/a>\u00a0which reads as Satan leads the ball<\/em>. \u00a0It is set in France during the early 20th-century during the government of Poincare where Anquetil’s criticism spares no from socialist to nationalist. \u00a0He associates the names of prominent French figures with extreme scenes of debauchery in order to indicate that France was being led to ruin by those that governed it. \u00a0Georges Clemenceau, an early French prime minister is described as a “whoremonger” who brought victory in WWI and prostitution. \u00a0Antonin Dubost, president of the Senate, is found dead in a notorious brothel in which he was a regular customer, supposedly poisoned by police. \u00a0All three of these publications can be found in Widener’s collection.<\/p>\n
