Atlas de poche des plantes des champs, des prairies et des bois : a l’usage des promeneurs et des excursionistes<\/em>\u00a0was probably a popular reference tool for\u00a0hikers in late 19th-century France which\u00a0<\/span>describes<\/span>\u00a0flowers and plants that one might find in the woods<\/span>. \u00a0We discovered Series 1 and 2 within the Santo Domingo collection and the Botany Libraries already have Series 4 in their collection. \u00a0T<\/span>he two guides contain gorgeous\u00a0<\/span>colored plates<\/span> and helpful information about location, physical description, and other fun facts about the plants. \u00a0For example let us look at Rubus caesius<\/em> otherwise known as the European dewberry which can be found in forests or areas with rocky basic soil. \u00a0It can grow in a\u00a0light amount of shade up to 2 meters high with prickly stems that are bluish-grey. \u00a0The shrub grows a wild fruit of a bluish black (the dewberry) that flowers from June to September.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\"Img0008\"Liseron des champs<\/em> also known as field\u00a0bindweed or\u00a0the “Virgin’s dress” comes from the morning glory family. \u00a0A climbing or creeping plant it can also grow up to 2 meters high. \u00a0Though the trumpet shaped flowers are physically pleasing to the eye it is known as a nuisance weed that chokes out cultivated plants. \u00a0This invasive plant can be difficult to get rid of because the seeds remain viable for up to twenty years in the soil and one single plant can produce a whopping 500 seeds.<\/p>\n

\"Img0009\"<\/a> \"Img0010\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Red valerian has a number of different names such\u00a0as kiss-me-quick, fox’s brush and my personal favorite- Jupiter’s beard! \u00a0It can be found in rocky locations at low elevations with a high\u00a0alkaline content in the soil. Both the leaves and roots can be eaten, in salads or\u00a0soups, but whether they are actually tasty seems to be in question. \u00a0Although red valerian\u00a0is sometimes reported to have medicinal properties it is probably due to a\u00a0confusion with true valerian<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0Valeriana officinalis<\/i>. \u00a0This type of valerian has\u00a0been used as a sedative, migraine treatment, pain reliever, and antiseptic. \u00a0But\u00a0most fascinating is the use of valerian in medieval Sweden where it was put in a groom’s wedding clothing to ward off the “envy of elves.”<\/p>\n
