{"id":6225,"date":"2015-08-20T10:00:04","date_gmt":"2015-08-20T14:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/?p=6225"},"modified":"2015-08-21T10:42:23","modified_gmt":"2015-08-21T14:42:23","slug":"observer-ing-the-60s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/2015\/08\/20\/observer-ing-the-60s\/","title":{"rendered":"Observer-ing the 60s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/07\/Img0013.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6226 size-medium\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/07\/Img0013-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"Img0013\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/07\/Img0013-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/07\/Img0013-814x1024.jpg 814w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/07\/Img0013.jpg 1639w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a><em>\u00a0This post is part of an ongoing series featuring items from the newly acquired\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hcl.harvard.edu\/libraries\/houghton\/collections\/modern\/santo_domingo.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Julio Mario Santo Domingo Collection<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Color supplements to established newspapers were first produced in the 1960s\u00a0and are believed by many to have changed the face of newspapers. \u00a0Many thought that a color magazine would cheapen the journalistic integrity of the Observer, a British publication, but economic realities soon forced them to join the crowd.\u00a0 The Observer began producing color supplements in 1964 amidst a new world of prosperity and possibility which seemed easily attainable with the great machine of advertising behind it. \u00a0\u00a0The first issue was 64 pages, 30 of which were in full color and half of the magazine featured advertisements for\u00a0products like cars, sofas, whiskey, anti-wrinkle creams, and dishwashers. \u00a0This particular issue of the Observer supplement is from December 3, 1967 and really seems to speak to the chaotic nature of this time period when the younger generation often appeared to the older as a riot of symbols and images.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/07\/Img0015.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6228 size-medium\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/07\/Img0015-249x300.jpg\" alt=\"Img0015\" width=\"249\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/07\/Img0015-249x300.jpg 249w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/07\/Img0015-850x1024.jpg 850w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/07\/Img0015.jpg 1699w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 249px) 100vw, 249px\" \/><\/a>Within this issue &#8220;Poster Power&#8221; was an article that explored how the new artists of the Underground adopted the\u00a0disposable poster as their medium of expression. \u00a0This particular scene was staged\u00a0by Peter Blake, a painter, and Jan Howarth, and you can&#8217;t help but be struck by the diversity and variety of the posters. \u00a0They are in essence trying to capture the spirit of the &#8217;60s by displaying the artistic choices of the people involved and the emerging pop art movement of the day. \u00a0If one wanted to know about the music scene this article about\u00a0Jimi Hendrix chronicles his performances in England and his &#8220;dangerously&#8221;
