Sullivan, who was also a newspaper columnist. \u00a0Sullivan&#8217;s book\u00a0explores his opinions about criminals and corruption in\u00a0Chicago during the early 20th-century and the attitude of the American public\u00a0towards criminals. He states\u00a0that the modern criminal is careful and typically protected by a larger &#8220;organization.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One chapter details the rise of Al Capone describing the bootlegging operations and the gradual pervasive corruption that infected the city. \u00a0The writing throughout is clearly skewed by Sullivan&#8217;s own experiences as a middle-class educated white man, but nonetheless it does show a specific point of view within the historical context. \u00a0The content is very\u00a0sensationalist which makes sense since\u00a0tabloid journalism was very popular around this time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6115\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/06\/Img0001-192x300.jpg\" alt=\"Img0001\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/06\/Img0001-192x300.jpg 192w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/06\/Img0001-656x1024.jpg 656w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/06\/Img0001.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/06\/Img00011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6138\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/06\/Img00011-193x300.jpg\" alt=\"Img0001\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/06\/Img00011-193x300.jpg 193w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/06\/Img00011-657x1024.jpg 657w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/06\/Img00011.jpg 1628w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/id.lib.harvard.edu\/aleph\/014310498\/catalog\" target=\"_blank\">Le gang et la d\u00e9bauche aux Etats-Unis : ennemis publics no. 1<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is the French translation of\u00a0the original title <a href=\"http:\/\/id.lib.harvard.edu\/aleph\/014212589\/catalog\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s to Crime<\/a>, which was cataloged by us back in the fall. \u00a0The author Courtney Cooper also had quite a flair for the dramatic both in his writing and his life experiences. \u00a0The title to his book is a direct response to the sloan &#8220;Crime Does Not Pay&#8221; which he considers to be &#8220;drivel.&#8221; \u00a0Before he was a newspaper reporter and author Cooper\u00a0worked for a traveling circus as a clown and eventually became the general manager. \u00a0His connection to the circus continued throughout his lifetime and he was the chief publicist for\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Barnum and Bailey Circus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barnum_and_Bailey_Circus\">Ringling Brothers, Barnum &amp; Bailey Circus<\/a>\u00a0when he died. \u00a0Cooper was also quite an authority on crime and wrote several books and many articles dealing with corruption and drugs. \u00a0He was a supporter of the early days of the FBI and apparently J. Edgar Hoover was equally impressed with his knowledge of crime in America. \u00a0It is believed that he was a close friend of Hoover&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>All of these volumes can be found in Widener&#8217;s collection:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/id.lib.harvard.edu\/aleph\/014310487\/catalog\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Chicago : ville du crime<\/em> <\/a>\/ Edward Dean Sullivan ; Trad. de l&#8217;anglais par Andr\u00e9 Vialis.
