Thompson, the curator of the museum at the Royal College of Surgeons, this book is well researched and thorough.\u00a0 Thompson looks at different literary references, including Shakespeares\u2019 <em>Antony and Cleopatra<\/em>, as well as historical documents and objects to weave his story about the magical plant.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/05\/IMG_0066.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6016\" style=\"margin-left: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/05\/IMG_0066-193x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mandrake\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/05\/IMG_0066-193x300.jpg 193w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/05\/IMG_0066-660x1024.jpg 660w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/05\/IMG_0066.jpg 798w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/><\/a>Thompson wrote extensively on plants and poisons, as well as the links between the medical world and the magical.\u00a0 Several other of Thompson\u2019s books can be found at Harvard including <em><a href=\"http:\/\/id.lib.harvard.edu\/aleph\/000672616\/catalog\" target=\"_blank\">The Quacks of Old London<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/id.lib.harvard.edu\/aleph\/000676181\/catalog\" target=\"_blank\">Magic and healing<\/a><\/em>, and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/id.lib.harvard.edu\/aleph\/003648051\/catalog\" target=\"_blank\">Poisons and poisoners, with historical accounts of some famous mysteries in ancient and modern times<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 <em><a href=\"http:\/\/id.lib.harvard.edu\/aleph\/000673308\/catalog\" target=\"_blank\">The Mystic Mandrake<\/a> <\/em>is part of the Santo Doming Collection and can be viewed at Widener Library.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Thanks to Emma Clement, Santo Domingo Library Assistant, for contributing this post.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post is part of an ongoing series featuring items from the newly acquired Santo Domingo collection.
