{"id":5977,"date":"2015-05-14T10:00:15","date_gmt":"2015-05-14T14:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/?p=5977"},"modified":"2015-05-13T15:29:13","modified_gmt":"2015-05-13T19:29:13","slug":"youth-quake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/2015\/05\/14\/youth-quake\/","title":{"rendered":"Youth quake!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This post is part of an ongoing series featuring items from the newly acquired\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hcl.harvard.edu\/libraries\/houghton\/collections\/modern\/santo_domingo.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Julio Mario Santo Domingo Collection<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/05\/IMG_00521.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-5978 alignleft\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/05\/IMG_00521-180x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0052\" width=\"180\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/05\/IMG_00521-180x300.jpg 180w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/05\/IMG_00521.jpg 505w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <strong>What&#8217;s the younger generation coming to?\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/em>This is a question that parents have been asking probably since the dawn of time.\u00a0 However it is especially interesting when looked at through the lens of the 1960s. \u00a0The 60&#8217;s\u00a0was such a time of discovery, change, and upheaval that the emergence of a strong voice for young people was almost a foregone conclusion. \u00a0Reporters and photographers of United Press International and Cowles turned\u00a0to kids in high school, college, and other popular hangouts\u00a0in order to tune into this new voice\u00a0in the volume <em>Youth quake<\/em>.\u00a0 Young people were asked about music, religion, sex, civil rights, politicians, money, books, and drinking to name just a few of the covered topics.\u00a0 Then they wrote a series of\u00a0articles to report the findings of these conversations.<br \/>\nThe book covers what you might expect detailing drug trips and the sex revolution, but it also focuses in on serious minded youths that were\u00a0committed to making a better life for themselves as well as the\u00a0world. \u00a0One of the articles points out that the Peace Corps, which was established in the 1960s, is one of the greatest achievements of this &#8220;serious minded youth.&#8221; \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/05\/IMG_00561.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5984\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/05\/IMG_00561-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0056\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/05\/IMG_00561-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/05\/IMG_00561.jpg 455w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 Another interesting section is a series of articles that fall under <em>Conversations Parent&#8217;s Never Hear&#8230;
