{"id":5917,"date":"2015-04-30T10:00:49","date_gmt":"2015-04-30T14:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/?p=5917"},"modified":"2015-04-30T09:49:15","modified_gmt":"2015-04-30T13:49:15","slug":"feel-a-librarian-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/2015\/04\/30\/feel-a-librarian-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Feel a librarian today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This post is part of an ongoing series featuring items from the newly acquired\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hcl.harvard.edu\/libraries\/houghton\/collections\/modern\/santo_domingo.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Julio Mario Santo Domingo Collection<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/IMG_0001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5918\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/IMG_0001-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0001\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/IMG_0001-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/IMG_0001-1024x659.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/IMG_0001.jpg 1182w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Before Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert there was a man named <a href=\"http:\/\/abelraisescain.com\/alan_abel_media_pranks_hoaxes.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Alan Abel<\/a>. \u00a0Actor, writer, filmmaker, comedian, jazz musician and professional prankster these are all the many faces of Abel. \u00a0For the past half-century Abel has been pranking the media and\u00a0the world and\u00a0it all began\u00a0in 1951 with S.I.N.A. \u00a0The Society for Indecency to Naked Animals had an important\u00a0mission- to clothe all animals for the sake of modesty. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/SINA-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5922\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/SINA-1-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"SINA-1\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/SINA-1-226x300.jpg 226w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/SINA-1.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/a>It began as\u00a0a tounge-in-cheek commentary on censorship in America, but the media went crazy for S.I.N.A. which many took seriously and this is when Abel realized that with little evidence and a straight face he could convince people of this absurd idea.<\/p>\n<p>Thus began a long career of creating <a href=\"http:\/\/abelraisescain.com\/alan_abel_media_pranks_hoaxes.htm\" target=\"_blank\">hoaxes<\/a> some small and many\u00a0much more elaborate. \u00a0There was the time that Abel faked his own <a href=\"http:\/\/hoaxes.org\/archive\/permalink\/the_death_of_alan_abel\" target=\"_blank\">death<\/a> and had his obituary published in the New York Times. \u00a0The story that was published said that he had a heart attack while skiing in Utah scouting locations for a movie called <em>Who&#8217;s Going to Bite Your Neck, Dear, When All of My Teeth are Gone? \u00a0<\/em>Another hoax involved Jenny McCarthy who in 1997 had a controversial ad for Candies featuring her sitting on a toilet. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/JENNYMCCARTHY-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5935\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/JENNYMCCARTHY-1-234x300.jpg\" alt=\"JENNYMCCARTHY-1\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/JENNYMCCARTHY-1-234x300.jpg 234w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/JENNYMCCARTHY-1.jpg 545w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Soon after Stoidi Puekaw decided to market &#8220;Jenny&#8217;s Pint O&#8217;Pee&#8221; claiming there were 500,000 cases of her urine ready to be shipped from Mexico. \u00a0Her lawyers quickly claimed trademark infringement and when Abel revealed the joke he pointed out his pseudonym read backwards spelled\u00a0Wake Up Idiots!<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0The Button Book<\/em> was a joint project between Abel and his wife Jeanne with the illustrations by Cynthia Lansing York. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/IMG_0003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5920\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/IMG_0003-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0003\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/IMG_0003-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/IMG_0003-1024x696.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/IMG_0003.jpg 1132w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The pages display potential buttons that the reader is encouraged to enjoy on the page or even cut out of the book to wear as real buttons. \u00a0As the Abel&#8217;s point out they are also extremely useful to conceal a hole in a sweater or perhaps use as a monocle. \u00a0The pages of buttons seem to veer between political commentary, satire, puns, and\u00a0double entendres.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/IMG_0002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-5919 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/IMG_0002-206x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0002\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" align=\"center\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/IMG_0002-206x300.jpg 206w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/IMG_0002-703x1024.jpg 703w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/04\/IMG_0002.jpg 790w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The button book<\/em> by Alan and Jeanne Abel.
