Her pride is evident in the words inscribed on the front flyleaf: &#8220;Not to be lent. Sarah O. Jewett. April 1877. This is the first copy of Deephaven that was printed, and it is my own. I don\u2019t wish to lend it &#8211; there&#8217;s another which can be lent in the bookrack on my table.&#8221; Jewett was wise to keep a lending copy on hand, for it happens that the \u201cbookrack\u201d copy has not been identified; likely it was lent out and never returned.
