{"id":5373,"date":"2014-12-18T09:00:16","date_gmt":"2014-12-18T14:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/?p=5373"},"modified":"2014-12-16T13:50:42","modified_gmt":"2014-12-16T18:50:42","slug":"nostalgia-for-the-20th-century","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/2014\/12\/18\/nostalgia-for-the-20th-century\/","title":{"rendered":"Nostalgia for the 20th Century"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This post is part of an ongoing series featuring items from the newly acquired Santo Domingo collection.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/12\/IMG_0010.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5376\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/12\/IMG_0010-300x295.png\" alt=\"All gone\" width=\"300\" height=\"295\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/12\/IMG_0010-300x295.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/12\/IMG_0010.png 854w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the end of every year, while preparing for the new one, people are often struck with nostalgia.\u00a0 This feeling, not just for the past year, but of past eras, is evoked in David Seidman\u2019s book <em>All Gone: Things that aren\u2019t Anymore<\/em>.\u00a0 Written at the end of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century as fears about the new millennium were ramping up, Seidman showcases the gadgets and cultural icons that are representative of that time period and gives a glimpse into the meaning of that nostalgia.\u00a0 Spanning topics from food and drink to law, government and politics, <em>All Gone<\/em> is a catalog of important events in the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century.\u00a0 Accompanied by black and white photographs, this book is perfect end of year reading.<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/12\/IMG_0014.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5379\" style=\"margin-left: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/12\/IMG_0014-275x300.png\" alt=\"All gone\" width=\"275\" height=\"300\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/12\/IMG_0014-275x300.png 275w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/12\/IMG_0014.png 752w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even items as seemingly trivial as wristwatches and spectacles get a section.\u00a0 Seidman gives a short history of the watch, from the past models that required winding to the newer quartz watches that could be outfitted with anything from a calculator to a calendar.\u00a0 On the more serious side, Seidman discusses the politics of the Cold War and the devastation of apartheid.\u00a0 One really interesting chapter goes in to high-speed transportation, not just steam locomotives and trains, but also a discussion of NASA and Skylab, as well as different types of airlines that are no longer around are included in this chapter.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Although many think of air travel in the 1960s and 1970s as expensive and very fancy, as early as the 1980s budget airlines started popping up with no frills cheap flights.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/12\/IMG_0011.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5377\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/12\/IMG_0011-275x300.png\" alt=\"All gone\" width=\"275\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/12\/IMG_0011-275x300.png 275w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/12\/IMG_0011.png 752w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>David Seidman is an expert on pop culture and often writes for newspapers and journals on the topic.\u00a0 <a title=\"All gone\" href=\"http:\/\/id.lib.harvard.edu\/aleph\/014242162\/catalog%20\" target=\"_blank\"><em>All gone: things that aren&#8217;t there anymore<\/em>\u00a0 \/ by David Seidman. \u00a0Los Angeles : General Pub.
