Christopher Hudson among other pseudonyms throughout his career. \u00a0Little is known of the real life of Blaine mainly because he seemed to change his story about his origins and life according to his mood. \u00a0Apparently he did work for a variety of clients including publishers, pornographers, and even Hollywood movie producers. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">What is known is that Blaine\u00a0created the original covers for John Steinbeck&#8217;s first two novels\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hollis.harvard.edu\/HVD:HVD_ALEPH003779455\" target=\"_blank\">Cup of Gold<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/02\/Cup-of-Gold-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5618\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/02\/Cup-of-Gold-1-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"Cup of Gold 1\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/02\/Cup-of-Gold-1-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/02\/Cup-of-Gold-1-1024x648.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/hollis.harvard.edu\/HVD:HVD_ALEPH003669118\" target=\"_blank\">To A God Unknown<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/02\/God-Unknown-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5619\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/02\/God-Unknown-1-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"God Unknown 1\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/02\/God-Unknown-1-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/02\/God-Unknown-1-1024x699.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nboth of which can be found in Houghton and are pictured here. \u00a0Blaine also designed the endpapers for\u00a0<em>To A God Unknown<\/em>. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/02\/God-Unknown-3-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5620\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/02\/God-Unknown-3-2-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"God Unknown 3 (2)\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/02\/God-Unknown-3-2-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2015\/02\/God-Unknown-3-2-1024x820.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Blaine and Steinbeck met in 1925 on the steamship <em>Katrina\u00a0<\/em>where they\u00a0became friends. \u00a0Later on when Steinbeck wrote\u00a0<em>Cup of Gold<\/em>\u00a0the publisher contacted Blaine hoping\u00a0his recognizable style would draw readers to this new author&#8217;s work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>The Maniac<\/em> is written anonymously\u00a0and the author refers to herself as a &#8220;Human Document&#8221;
