{"id":527,"date":"2010-02-17T15:41:57","date_gmt":"2010-02-17T20:41:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/?p=527"},"modified":"2015-01-08T14:11:15","modified_gmt":"2015-01-08T19:11:15","slug":"charles-armitage-brown-studies-hogarth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/2010\/02\/17\/charles-armitage-brown-studies-hogarth\/","title":{"rendered":"Charles Armitage Brown studies Hogarth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2010\/02\/Charles-Brown-Rakes-Progress-004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-533\" title=\"Charles-Brown-Rake's-Progress-004\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2010\/02\/Charles-Brown-Rakes-Progress-004.jpg\" alt=\"Charles-Brown-Rake's-Progress-004\" width=\"192\" height=\"204\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a>Charles Armitage Brown (1787-1842) is perhaps best known for his friendship with the poet John Keats.\u00a0 A skilled amateur artist, Brown is responsible for one of the most recognizable images of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npg.org.uk\/collections\/search\/portrait.php?search=ss&amp;firstRun=true&amp;sText=keats&amp;LinkID=mp02480&amp;page=1&amp;rNo=6&amp;role=sit\" target=\"_blank\">his friend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Houghton recently acquired a bound album of Brown&#8217;s drawings, produced between 1809 and 1811.\u00a0 The ink drawings include sixty-four heads, studies Brown copied from William Hogarth&#8217;s 1733 series <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soane.org\/rakesprogress.htm\" target=\"_blank\">A Rake&#8217;s Progress,<\/a> <\/em>and are so fine they almost appear to be engravings.\u00a0 Brown presented the volume to Henry Heath (perhaps the caricaturist) in memory of Brown&#8217;s brother James, who died in October 1815.\u00a0 Displayed here are studies of &#8220;A woman behind receiving the Watch&#8221; (above), &#8220;A French Dancing-Master&#8221;, and &#8220;A Teacher of the French horn, giving a specimen of his musical powers&#8221; (below).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2010\/02\/Charles-Brown-Rakes-Progress-002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-534\" title=\"Charles-Brown-Rake's-Progress-002\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2010\/02\/Charles-Brown-Rakes-Progress-002.jpg\" alt=\"Charles-Brown-Rake's-Progress-002\" width=\"303\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2010\/02\/Charles-Brown-Rakes-Progress-002.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2010\/02\/Charles-Brown-Rakes-Progress-002-274x300.jpg 274w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2010\/02\/Charles-Brown-Rakes-Progress-003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-535\" title=\"Charles-Brown-Rake's-Progress-003\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2010\/02\/Charles-Brown-Rakes-Progress-003.jpg\" alt=\"Charles-Brown-Rake's-Progress-003\" width=\"298\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2010\/02\/Charles-Brown-Rakes-Progress-003.jpg 750w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2010\/02\/Charles-Brown-Rakes-Progress-003-300x298.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Houghton&#8217;s collections also include pieces of Brown&#8217;s correspondence\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/nrs.harvard.edu\/urn-3:FHCL.Hough:hou00062\" target=\"_blank\">MS Keats 4.3.1 &#8211; 4.3.25<\/a>), Brown&#8217;s manuscript &#8220;Life of John Keats&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/nrs.harvard.edu\/urn-3:FHCL.Hough:hou00062\" target=\"_blank\">MS Keats 4.3.27<\/a>) several Brown transcripts of Keats&#8217;s poetry (in <a href=\"http:\/\/nrs.harvard.edu\/urn-3:FHCL.Hough:hou00062\">MS Keats 3<\/a>), published works by Brown, including his biography of Keats, and other material, which can be found by searching <a href=\"http:\/\/hollis.harvard.edu\" target=\"_blank\">HOLLIS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/id.lib.harvard.edu\/aleph\/012144998\/catalog\" target=\"_blank\">MS Eng 1641<\/a>.\u00a0 Purchased with the Amy Lowell Trust and Evelyn Ryan Pope Book Fund.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Charles Armitage Brown (1787-1842) is perhaps best known for his friendship with the poet John Keats.\u00a0 A skilled amateur artist, Brown is responsible for one of the most recognizable images of his friend.
