1975-2005 : 30 Years of Poltroonery<\/em>\u00a0to &#8220;celebrate thirty years of existence.&#8221; \u00a0Poltroon is a small press from Berkely, California that is still printing today. \u00a0The volume includes some of their most memorable ephemera reproductions along with brief explanations of their history and usage. \u00a0Here are a few of my favorites. \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5118\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/10\/KIC_Image_0003-273x300.jpg\" alt=\"KIC_Image_0003\" width=\"273\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/10\/KIC_Image_0003-273x300.jpg 273w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/10\/KIC_Image_0003-933x1024.jpg 933w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/10\/KIC_Image_0003.jpg 1364w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Canine Wine label was born on a\u00a0night when one of the authors was drinking\u00a0terrible wine with their friend Nancy who exclaimed &#8220;This wine is not fit for dogs!&#8221; \u00a0Thus the concept of <em>Wine for Dogs<\/em> was born\u00a0and they printed up a few wine labels including the Weimaraner Rhine Whine pictured.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M\u00e4dchen in Uniform<\/strong> was printed by the press in 1976 with 50 original copies. \u00a0It features a poem by Bernard de Ventadorn and a paper doll of a woman with various military outfits, including a pink purse. \u00a0Bernard was a master <a title=\"Troubadour\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Troubadour\">troubadour<\/a>\u00a0from the Middle Ages, his poem is reproduced with a translation which reads,<\/p>\n<h6>she&#8217;ll do badly if she<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/10\/KIC_Image_0007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  alignleft wp-image-5119\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/10\/KIC_Image_0007-234x300.jpg\" alt=\"KIC_Image_0007\" width=\"283\" height=\"363\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/10\/KIC_Image_0007-234x300.jpg 234w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/10\/KIC_Image_0007-799x1024.jpg 799w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/a><\/h6>\n<h6>dont summon me to<\/h6>\n<h6>where she undresses,<\/h6>\n<h6>there at her command<\/h6>\n<h6>near the bed, or at the<\/h6>\n<h6>edge, I may remove<\/h6>\n<h6>her well-fitted shoes,<\/h6>\n<h6>on my knees &amp; hum-<\/h6>\n<h6>bled, if it shld please<\/h6>\n<h6>her to offer me a foot.<\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There is also a beautiful visual representation of Miss Flite&#8217;s birds from Charles Dickens&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/id.lib.harvard.edu\/aleph\/002906131\/catalog%20\" target=\"_blank\">Bleak House<\/a>. \u00a0For those unfamiliar with the tale Miss Flite kept a collection of caged birds which she planned to release when a judgement from the Jarndyce and Jarndyce lawsuit was\u00a0reached. \u00a0One of the many ironies is\u00a0that the lawsuit goes on for so long the birds keep dying and need to be replaced. \u00a0It is a common interpretation that the caged birds represent the people who have been trapped by the\u00a0lawsuit and their names represent the many ideas and ideals\u00a0associated with it like Joy, Hope, Madness, Cunning, Folly, and Ashes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/10\/KIC_Image_0008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-5120\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/10\/KIC_Image_0008-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"KIC_Image_0008\" width=\"365\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/10\/KIC_Image_0008-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/10\/KIC_Image_0008-1024x727.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To explore\u00a0more of the amazing reproductions of the original ephemera and learn about the Poltroon Press you can find this volume in Houghton Library.<\/p>\n<p>Pshaw : Poltroon Press, 1975-2005.\u00a0[Berkeley, Calif. :Poltroon Press,2006].\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/id.lib.harvard.edu\/aleph\/014327267\/catalog%20\" target=\"_blank\">Z232.P795P74 2006<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Thanks to Alison Harris, Santo Domingo Project Manager and Ryan Wheeler, Rare Book Cataloger, for contributing this post.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post is part of an ongoing series featuring items from the newly acquired\u00a0Julio Mario Santo Domingo Collection.
