{"id":5072,"date":"2014-09-25T09:11:03","date_gmt":"2014-09-25T13:11:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/?p=5072"},"modified":"2014-09-25T09:11:03","modified_gmt":"2014-09-25T13:11:03","slug":"the-best-selling-preacher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/2014\/09\/25\/the-best-selling-preacher\/","title":{"rendered":"The Best Selling Preacher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This post is part of an ongoing series featuring items from the newly acquired Santo Domingo collection.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/crossandtheswitchblade1972_01_cov1008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin-right: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/crossandtheswitchblade1972_01_cov1008-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Cross and the Switchblade\" width=\"183\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a>Several books by the Reverend David Wilkerson and his followers are in the Santo Domingo Collection.\u00a0\u00a0 Wilkerson, an evangelic pastor who moved to New York because he felt called to help young gang members and drug addicts, recounts his success stories in books like <em>The Cross and the Switchblade <\/em>and <em>Hey, Preach\u2026You\u2019re coming through<\/em>. \u00a0\u00a0Also included in the collection are books by Nicky Cruz, one of Wilkerson\u2019s greatest success stories, like <em>Run Baby Run<\/em> an autobiographical account of his gang life and recovery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/heypreachyourecomingthrough_01_cov1017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5076 size-medium\" style=\"margin-left: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/heypreachyourecomingthrough_01_cov1017-181x300.jpg\" alt=\"Hey Preach...You're Coming Through\" width=\"181\" height=\"300\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/heypreachyourecomingthrough_01_cov1017-181x300.jpg 181w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/heypreachyourecomingthrough_01_cov1017-617x1024.jpg 617w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/houghtonmodern\/files\/2014\/09\/heypreachyourecomingthrough_01_cov1017.jpg 1255w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 181px) 100vw, 181px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wilkerson, born into a religious family, devoted his life to the church and began preaching at a very young age.\u00a0 After hearing about young men on trial for gang related offenses, he went to New York, ran into the courtroom and tried, unsuccessfully, to disrupt the trial. \u00a0Not to be discouraged, he later\u00a0founded the recovery group Teen Challenge to work with teen addicts and gang members. \u00a0Wilkerson also founded the Time Square Church;
